Hannah Harper is officially the next American Idol. The 25-year-old from Missouri won season 24 of the singing competition on Monday, May 11, beating out Jordan McCullough (runner-up) and Keyla Richardson (third place).
The three-hour finale ended with Harper performing Chris Tomlin’s “At The Cross (Love Ran Red)” in tears, as her fellow contestants joined her on stage.
Hannah Harper The Audition That Left Carrie Underwood in Tears

Harper’s journey to the Idol crown started with an original song called “String Cheese.” And yes, you read that right. The song was about her personal struggle with postpartum depression.
Here’s how she explained it during her audition:
“I was sitting on my couch wallowing. I have boys, you know. Everybody wants to touch you, and I didn’t want to be touched. My youngest son kept coming up to me. I was just having a pity party, praying that the Lord would calm my spirit.”
Then her son said something that changed everything.
“He said, ‘Mom, open this. Open my cheese.’ I’m like, ‘Leave me alone with the doggone cheese.'”
But she opened it. And that simple moment became a turning point.
“I finally opened his cheese, and when I did, I realized God had put me in that place. Where I was in my house was the biggest ministry I could ever have – being a mom. So I gathered myself, got up off the couch, quit throwing a pity party, and kicked postpartum depression in the butt.”
Carrie Underwood’s Emotional Reaction

Carrie Underwood called it “the most relatable song” she’d ever heard.
“You’re gorgeous. You look famous already,” Underwood told Harper. “I just think you have a beautiful simplicity to your voice. You’re one that I’m going to think about when we leave here. I wonder what song she’s gonna sing next.”
She added, “I feel like I’m gonna be just rooting for you. I love everything about everything you just did. I’ll go first – it’s a yes from me.”
Hannah Harper: A Winner with Real Heart

This wasn’t just another singing competition victory. Harper’s win felt personal. Her story – a young mom battling postpartum depression, finding hope in a cheese stick, and turning pain into music – resonated with millions of viewers.
She didn’t just sing her way to the top. She connected.
And that’s exactly what American Idol has always been about.
